Day 3: Posadas, Argentina
San Ignacio Ruins, Santa Ana & Loreto
You are picked up from your hotel and will start your Jesuit experience in Posadas.
San Ignacio
The first South American Jesuit missions were founded through the Guayra territory, in the Brazilian state of Para, in 1587. By 1608, the governor of Paraguay received a Royal order that the missionaries must expand to Paraná, and began the process of converting the Natives, all supported by the Royal Treasury.
Upon instruction, fathers Cataldino and Masseta ventured deep into the jungle, North of The Iguazú Falls, and undertook a missionary expedition to Guayra, where the San Ignacio missions were founded. Father Antonio Ruiz de Montoya then established eleven more missions in the region between 1622 and 1629, making a total of thirteen historical sites in the Guayra area.
In these settlements, the Guaranies were prepared for defense, attack, and productivity. A triumph of the missions was the congregation of thousands of previously disjointed natives, working collectively in agriculture and cattle raising. The production levels grew to a point where it is estimated that the settlements commanded some 750,000 cows and over 30,000 horses! This is in addition to vast farming lands including 500,000 acres of Mate plantations.
The excessive power wielded by the Jesuits led to their eventual downfall and eventual expulsion from Latin America. The sites were abandoned and overrun by the jungle. Here, they lay undisturbed for 300 years, until rediscovery and restoration between 1940 and 1950, with San Ignacio showcasing one of the best preserved Jesuit Complex in Argentina.
Santa Ana & Loreto Ruins
Explore the settlements, exploring each of the unique features that make them special and different. The experience invites you to imagine the grandeur of an era that is still recognized today. Each of the 30 Guaraní villages had its own identity and played a specific role in the complex network of the Guaraní Jesuit Missions.
Therefore, when assessing and rescuing a Jesuit settlement, you must not lose sight of the unique aspects that made it necessary and vital in the context of other settlements. In this case, you will visit the ruins of Loreto and Santa Ana, both located on National Route 12, just 15 km from the ruins of San Ignacio.
The Jesuit Reductions of Santa Ana are located 40 kilometers from Posadas (capital of the Misiones Province) and 2 kilometers from the center of the town of the same name. These reductions are in a more natural setting, and their layout is like that of other villages. One of the unique features of this reduction is its rainwater channeling system.
The visit begins at the Museum, where your guide will tell you the story alongside a model showing how the village was laid out. He will also show you various artifacts found at the site. You will continue along the trails where you will see how the buildings of the Main Church, the priests’ house, and the Guaraní dwellings were laid out. You will also see how they divided their labor.
Another of the characteristics, as happened in some of the other 30 Jesuit towns, in this case the Reduction Cemetery, was reused as a local cemetery by the first immigrants who settled in the current town of Santa Ana.
After visiting the Santa Ana Reduction, you will return to National Route 12 for approximately 7 km to reach the Loreto Ruins Reduction, another of the 30 villages, and no less important.
This reduction was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984, along with other reductions in the area. Over time, vegetation covered the ruins, and local archaeologists did a great job of showing its history from the site. This reduction was unique in that it had a printing press; the engraving was made locally by the Jesuit priests. The press and support were made from local wood, and the type was cast in lead and tin. It traveled between the villages of Loreto, Santa María de la Mayor, or San Javier, depending on the printing needs.

Day 4: Posadas / Encarnacion, Paraguay
Trinidad de Parana and Jesus de Tavarangue
This morning, you will be transferred in a 20minute ride to Encarnacion, Paraguay. Have your passport ready for the border crossing (be patient as it may take some time).
Upon your arrival, you will check in at your hotel.
Savoy Hotel Encarnación is a magnificent hotel located in southern Paraguay, on the banks of the Paraná River, in an exclusive area of the city of Encarnación. The 7,000 m² complex has 80 rooms with views of the waterfront and the hotel’s internal garden, as well as a restaurant, lobby bar, \ swimming pool, pool bar, gym, sauna, business center, and parking.
In the afternoon, you will visit the Jesuit reductions of Trinidad del Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangué. Trinidad is one of the most interesting and suggestive Jesuit ruins among them all, its main architects were the fathers Juan Bautista Prímoli, of Milan and the Catalan Jose Grimau. Not fully completed, this mission possessed one of the largest and most beautiful churches. Jesús de Tavarangué is almost in front of Trinidad, its church did not get to be finished due to the expulsion of the Jesuits of the country. Its architectural conception was totally different from the others, in Moorish style, unique in all the reductions. Both Reductions have been declared Universal Heritage of Humanity in 1993 by UNESCO.

Day 5: Encarnacion, Paraguay
German Colonies and Yerba Mate Experience
After breakfast transfer to the German colonies of Hohenau and Bella Vista which share the same origin and are a productive unit that led them to be called “United Colonies”. The oldest is Hohenau, located about 38 km northeast of Encarnación, whose origins date back to 1898; it is known for being the capital of Yerba Mate in Itapúa.
Yerba Mate is a typical Paraguayan plant, initially known as “the tea of the Jesuits”, with which the “tereré”, the country’s national drink, is prepared. It is made from the dried and ground leaves and small stems of the Ilex paraguariensis plant. This mixture is called yerba and is brewed into a beverage known as mate, traditionally drunk from a gourd with a sorbet.
You will visit a Yerba factory where you can observe the whole production cycle of the yerba mate, which starts in the nursery, the plantations, the drying sector and barbacuá, where the process of Yerba Mate production takes place, mill and packaging to reach the end of the product.
After this visit, return to Encarnación.

Day 6: Encarnacion / Posadas / Iguazu, Argentina
You will be met at the hotel, and you will be transferred to Posadas, Argentina and continue to Iguazu. (4-hour drive).
The highlight of the region is Iguazú Falls. Considered by many to be the most spectacular waterfall (or group of falls) in the world. The 200 or so feeding streams mingle and blend as they graciously appear out of the rainforest and surrounding vegetation, with the result being a true one-off sight, so unique it has long been declared a “Natural World Heritage Site”.
On your arrival, you will check in at your hotel.

Day 7: Iguazu, Argentina
Iguazu National Park
Today, you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to visit Argentina side of Iguazu Falls. Upon arrival at The Iguazú National Park, your first stop is the Visitors Center Ibyra-reta, which in the local dialect (Guaraní) means “The Tree Country”. The center offers an excellent insight into the rich biodiversity of the area. To visit the falls, the most convenient option is the “Ecologico de la Selva” train. The train was built in England and specially designed for the park, connecting the three principal areas. You find three stations: Central Station (where the visitors´ center is located), the Cataratas Station, which gives access to lower and upper trails, and the Devil’s Throat Station, which takes us to the main falls. It is a scenic 14km route of around 25 minutes in total.
To reach The Devil’s Throat properly, you either use the train or hike the Green Trail, which passes a swamp, home to multiple bird species, families of butterflies and other native flora and fauna. This trail is a relaxed 15-minute walk and a lovely introduction to the area.
From Cataratas Station, we find a plaza, the starting point of the slightly longer Upper and Lower Trails. The upper offers great panoramic views at six fantastic lookout points along the 1-hour 30-minute trek, while the pace is steady, numerous rest areas can be found throughout.
The final Lower Trail offers a more intimate approach to the falls from below. From here, one gets a real sense of the immensity of this natural wonder, as the water pounds relentlessly into the rocks at the foot of The Devil’s Throat. This two-hour pathway has eight perfectly located lookout points; all of which ensure that getting wet sooner or later is almost guaranteed! The Lower route offers a mix of perspectives on the falls, from below, as well as a glimpse of the Brazilian side of Iguacu. You will finish the experience and will be dropped off at your hotel.

Day 8: Iguazu, Argentina / Iguazu, Brazil / Iguazu, Argentina
Iguazu Falls Brazilian side
You will be picked up from your hotel and crossing the border to Brazil side. Beginning at the main entrance to the park, a private car will take you to the trails that lie within. These tracks offer the most incredible panoramic views at numerous lookout points and ledges along the way, making any effort more than worthwhile as you hike. We highly recommend a morning visit, as the early Sun casts an incredible tone of shimmering light on the Argentine side of the falls at this time of day.
From the Brazilian side, the spectacular Devil’s Throat is the main highlight and is clearly visible. Fourteen mighty Falls dropping 350 feet with a force strong enough to create a never-ending spray cloud 100 feet tall. Look out for giant rainbows throughout the day depending on sunlight levels!
For a closer view of the central falls, you can take a relaxed walk through the subtropical forest of Iguaçu Park, to the base of Salto Floriano. From here, an elevator allows a speedy ascent to the top. There is also an option to walk out over a section of the falls at Salto Union on a suspended platform; certainly not for the faint-hearted.
*You will need Visa for entering to Brazil*
