Day 1: Arrive San Jose / Bajos del Toro, Costa Rica
Welcome to Costa Rica! On arrival in San Jose, clear immigration, collect luggage and proceed through customs. In the arrivals hall, you are met by a representative from Big Five Tours & Expeditions holding a sign with your last name. You are greeted, assisted with your luggage, and escorted to the waiting vehicle for the private 1.5 hour transfer to your hotel for a three night stay in the cloud forest.

Day 2: Bajos Del Toro
Waterfall hike & Tortillas!
We invite you to enjoy the lodge’s stunning trails. Your concierge will guide you along paths that trace a pristine creek to find soothing waterfalls. Along the way, you will learn fascinating secrets on the rare and vulnerable cloud forest eco-system.
In the afternoon, embrace the living culture of Bajos del Toro, highlighting unique elements of Costa Rica’s rural communities. Learn the traditional way of making fresh tortillas at Doña Olga’s house and share a pleasant moment with her. Just 5 minutes down the road in Bajos del Toro, this charming experience is wonderful for all ages.

Art Master Class
This engaging session will let you learn about Costa Rica’s traditional painted arts. It combines the oxcart’s flowing strokes with other indigenous techniques to create beautiful art on paper canvass. Led by the renowned local artist Isidro Madrigal Aguilera,an acclaimed steward of the decorated oxcart, Costa Rica’s most colorful icon. Its kaleidoscopic star motifs interweave with flowing crests that evoke the country’s bountiful flora. Considered by Unesco as one of humanity’s intangible cultural assets, this artform is best conveyed by Isidro, a certified local artist from Sarchí with a trajectory that spans 35 years. From his beginnings in the legendary Joaquín Chaverri Oxcart Workshop to his success as an independent artist, Isidro has mastered the unique patterns and compositions of this signature Costa Rican tradition.

Day 4: Bajos del Toro / Puerto Jimenez
This morning, you will have a private transfer (1 ½ hour) to San Jose domestic terminal to take the flight to Puerto Jimenez. On arrival, join your driver for the private transfer to your hotel.
Lapa Rios Lodge protects 1,000 acres of Central America’s last remaining tropical lowland rainforest. Here the real luxury is in living and breathing the jungle. Every inch is waiting to be discovered. You’ll encounter iconic frogs and macaws, endangered monkeys, and over 300 bird species. It’s a pristine environment where nature thrives in its rawest form.

Day 5: Puerto Jimenez
You can choose between these tours to do during the morning:
Birdwatching (morning and afternoon)
Watch the glorious sunrise and share the cool early morning air with over 360 species of bird that inhabit the Osa Peninsula. For keen birders and animal lovers, this guided tour around the Lapa Rios grounds and surrounding areas is a guaranteed opportunity to spot numerous species of birds, vibrant morpho butterflies, and most likely some mischievous monkeys too. High quality binoculars will be provided, as well as tea, coffee, and a light snack before you depart. Don’t worry if this is your first-time birding, it’s tailored for both experienced birders and beginners alike.

Medicinal plants tour
Learn from the accumulated knowledge of multiple generations, be it the local indigenous tribes, gold miners or the first farmers to settle here – conventional medicine as we know it today was not an option until recently. The Lapa Rios guides have endeavored to grow a collection of medicinal plants at the lodge and will accompany you on a walk through the gardens and into the rainforest. You will learn about traditional medicinal uses of plants, trees and seeds used to treat the various ailments people suffered from in this region. This tour is for all nature lovers interested in Costa Rican history, culture, and customs. A shorter version of this tour is available upon request.

Walk to Rainforest Ridge
Hike mostly downhill along the cool ridges of Lapa Rios’ most impressive primary and secondary forest as your guide points out the many hidden treasures of the vast Pacific lowland rainforest. Filled with towering ancient trees, the Ridge Walk through the rainforest offers breathtaking views and a memorable jungle experience for all hardy hikers.

Osa Trail
The Osa Trail offers the complete rainforest experience. This hike will take you through the reserve’s most remote and pristine forest and provides the best opportunity to see rare flora and fauna, majestic trees, 500-year-old vines, and biodiversity at its best. A fantastic way to truly immerse yourself in the wonders of the tropical rainforest.

Hike to Wild Waterfalls
Hike through the rainforest on your descent towards the Carbonera riverbed, a great area to search for endemic species such as dart frogs and other unique rainforest creatures. Once at the riverbed, you’ll splash through the river on your way to a pristine waterfall and its cool plunge pool for some swimming. This is a fun rainforest experience with some adventurous hiking, particularly enjoyable for nature lovers looking for a little challenge. This hike involves walking through the river and irregular terrain involved.

Matapalo Tour
This walk will take you past secondary forest and down to the nearby beaches. These Pacific shores are beautifully pristine, often deserted and truly undiscovered natural wonders. En route your guide will point out some of the liveliest and most active creatures in the rainforest from endangered scarlet macaws to playful monkeys. Matapalo is an easy walk to explore our sprawling coastline. You’ll walk along the road and the beach to spot lots of wildlife.

Day 6: Puerto Jimenez
Ngobe Tribe
Today you will be driven 1.5 hour to Aguas Ricas to meet with members of the Ngöbe tribe – one of the last remaining indigenous groups in the country – and learn about their ancient culture and customs from Mariano and his family. This small community of 120 people has been striving to maintain their traditions and culture while adapting to life in modern society. From medicinal herbs to smoke rituals and traditional food, you’ll gain a fascinating insight into the lives of these original Costa Rican settlers. The Ngöbe reserve spans over 4000 acres and sits on the boundary of the Corcovado National Park.
Then, you will meet Doña Aida who lives at La Palma de Puerto Jimenez.
She is woman that you wish to know, her life history is very inspirational as she has many stories to tell since she was born and grew up in what we know today as the Corcovado National Park. Her love and respect for nature is touching. Nowdays, at La Palma she has a family business which consists in developing a farm of heart of palm. You will share with her some traditional dishes, besides learning about this product and nature.

Day 7: Puerto Jimenez
Piro Ranch & Nature Reserve with Miguel Sanchez
Meet one of the original families and earliest local conservationists of Piro Village, during this fun and interactive half-day outing. The trip begins with a 20-minute 4×4 drive from Lapa Rios to Piro Ranch, which has been in the Sanchez family for over 150 years. The ranch and nature reserve encompasses 50 hectares of primary and secondary forest intersected by the crystalline Piro River. Miguel Sanchez and his family have dedicated their lives to protecting the forest, which is also a home and stopover for many wild species. During the visit, guests can choose from different walking trails, the longest of which is approximately 2.5 miles and culminates at a natural river pool perfect for a refreshing dip. The trails vary in length (the shortest is 0.1 miles) and offer different perspectives of the pristine reserve and opportunities to see birds and wildlife, such as resident toucans, Great Curassow, and monkeys. The highlight of the visit is sharing a delicious traditional lunch with Miguel, his family, and your guide while hearing their story and learning about daily life on the Osa Peninsula.

Day 8: Puerto Jimenez / San Jose depart
At a pre-arranged time, a representative from Lapa Rios will transfer you to the Puerto Jimenez airport to board a 50-minute commercial flight to San Jose. On arrival, you are met and escorted to the main terminal to check-in for your international flight.(B)
