Day 4: Atins
Today your host and driver will be at your disposal to take you to different lagoons in the Lencois Maranheses National Park, one of Brazil’s top natural attractions. This is an ecosystem formed of white sand dunes that look a bit like bedsheets spread across some 383,000 acres on the northeastern coast. The landscape was formed over thousands of years as the sand from riverbeds was deposited at the mouth of the rivers and brought back to the continent by winds and sea currents. Seasonal lagoons fill up with rainwater, mostly during the first six months of the year, making Lençóis Maranhenses a unique landscape. Mangroves, deserted beaches, bursitis palm tree and the Preguiças River adds to the park’s diversity.

The dunes have advanced some 31 miles into the continent and stretch along 27 miles of the coast, encompassing mostly deserted beaches. Some of the lagoons in the park are quite large. Lagoa Bonita and Lagoa Azul are near the town of Barreirinhas. Lagoa Tropical, also worth a visit, is closer to the village of Atins. Accompanied by your guide, cross the dunes in a jeep to take a dip in the lagoons. You can take a boat on the Preguiças River with stops at Pequenos Lençóis and the riverside kiosks; or visit the Preguiças lighthouse in Mandacaru.  You can also fly over the park (30-minute flight); take a day-long quad ride to Pequenos Lençóis; or go tubing on the Formiga River in Cardosa. On this path, nature is the star, and encompasses three areas of environmental protection, between Jericoacoara National Park (CE), Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (MA) and Parnaíba Delta Environmental Protection Area (PI).

With constant wind and a beautiful coastline, the village attracts wind-sports lovers and leisure travelers. The unpaved streets bring the beach’s white sand into town and to the rustic-chic hotels. Crabs from the mangroves and local oyster farms supply the restaurants of regional cuisine. Buggy and horseback are typical modes of transportation to explore the dunes fringed with coconut forests. Barra Grande is one of those destinations hard to get to, but once you do, you understand its worth.

On arrival, check in at Pousada BGK in the small village of Barra Grande in Piauí state. Barra Grande is one of the cities on the Emotions Route that connects Fortaleza to São Luis. Many details at the hotel are inspired by the owners’ global travels, yet still infused with an authentic taste of Brazil. Your exclusive beach escape is a place to reconnect with nature.
