Sri Lanka Luxury Tours

Most people envision Sri Lanka as an island with pristine beaches and turquoise waters. While this is true, the island boasts a rich and profound heritage, with over 3,000 years of documented history adding depth and character to its beauty.

Sri Lanka, a vibrant island nation in the Indian Ocean, has emerged from decades of unrest, attracting global travelers with its rapid development. Formerly known as Ceylon, it boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including ancient cities. Marco Polo hailed it as “the finest island in the world” for its abundant gems. Anuradhapura, its third capital, is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities and a key Buddhist site. Sigiriya features a fifth-century fortress with advanced water gardens and murals. Polonnaruwa is famed for its irrigation systems, which are still used today, while Digamadulla was the agricultural and spiritual hub. Kandy, despite invasions, preserves historic houses, palaces, and temples. Sri Lanka’s 24 parks teem with elephants, leopards, sloth bears, deer, reptiles, and over 400 bird species. The Sinharaja Rainforest and Peak Wilderness Sanctuary are prime for bird-watching. Tea plantations, rubber forests, and rice paddies highlight rural life, offering travelers rich cultural and natural experiences.

Big Five has partnered with OCEA, a local non-profit organization in Sri Lanka that is focused on Seagrass Restorations.

The Pilot project conducted during 2023-24 (which was visited in October 2023) had a good success rate of approximately 80%, which is a healthy rate (anything above 50% is considered successful).

OCEA selected a new restoration site for the Half-a-Hectare area on the Sinna Arichchalai island nearby. Pre-restoration studies were conducted to check the feasibility, which included a collection of soil samples, historical distribution, and quality of abiotic and biotic factors. Necessary set-up equipment was purchased.

During the visit, their team actively took part in the plant preparation process while the qualified researchers from OCEA conducted the following activities;

  • Collecting seagrass plugs from the donor site
  • Measuring surface water quality around the area (dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature, turbidity, pH, and a variety of other parameters)
  • Collecting Soil and mixing with Compost fertilizer to make the optimum mix
  • Planting the prepared plugs in jute hessian bags onto the optimum underwater surfaces
  • Collecting soil samples from both the donor site and the restoration site to conduct pre- & analysis post-planting
