The Waterfalls of Costa Rica

There are hundreds of waterfalls throughout Costa Rica, many of which are not accessible to the public. If you search hard enough, you can find a few destinations that do allow visitors. Because of the natural geography of the peninsula, rainwater flows towards the Montezuma side, so there are many waterfalls with water year round. Most of these have swimming holes, two have rope swings, and one is perfect for cliff diving.

Montezuma Falls

Montezuma Falls is considered the most famous waterfall in Costa Rica. It is actually comprised of three separate falls. To get to the first falls, you will want to begin at the ocean near Hotel Amor and trek up the river for about 10 to 20 minutes until you reach the highest waterfall, which has a huge swimming hole. To reach pool 2 and 3, you must climb up a steep path to the right of pool 1 and follow a trail up and to the right. Soon you will find a steep trail leading down. At this point, you will be between pool 2 and 3.

Delicias Falls

Not far from Montezuma Falls is a beautiful cascade known as Delicias Falls. Located in the next river valley to the south, this 40 meter high fall is relatively secluded and you might be the only one to visit it all day. These falls have a series of small depressions filled with water, perfect for romantic moments that nobody will be watching but the howling monkeys.

Cocolito Falls

Cocolito Falls is a magical place located about a two hour hike away from Montezuma. Should you decide to take the trip, you won’t be disappointed. These falls are very beautiful and can often be seen with a rainbow in them. The beach just before Cocolito is a perfect cove complete with white sand and turquoise water. Try to make the trip as early in the morning as possible. It is a very hot walk down the beach. Keep your eyes peeled, you are very likely to see wild animals on the beach at that time of day.

Montezuma is a place that attracts free spirited travelers for its mystical ambiance. You will definitely want to pay a visit when visiting Costa Rica.
